Hawa Mahal is one of the famous tourist place in Jaipur. The Hawa Mahal is a great example of the Rajputana architecture. Hawa Mahal is Constructed in 1799. In the city of Jaipur, the most sensational monument isĀ Hawa Mahal. Hawa Mahal overlooks as one of Jaipur’s main streets. It was constructed to offer women of the court an upper hand, the reason behind to do these is that they can watch the activities taking place in the bazaar as well as the surrounding streets behind stone-carved screens. For this purpose, these mahal was designed with over 900 niches. The whole building of Hawa Mahal is shaped like a crown adorning Lord Krishna’s head.
Many old palaces and houses were painted ocher-pink for the 1853 visit of Prince Albert.
As shown above the five storeyed pyramid structure of Hawa Mahal was designed by Lal Chand Ustad who dedicated his work to Lord Krishna and Radha. The pyramid shape of the Mahal gives it an appearance of the crown that adorned the head of Lord Krishna. This five-story, pyramid-shaped structure was totaly made up of small casements, each having tiny windows and arched roofs, which can be beautifully modeled and carved. Total lack of ornamentation on the inner face of the building. The chambers are plain having more mass of pillars and passages leading to the top storey.
The Mahal is fifty feet high and stands on a podium . The thickness of Hawa Mahal is less than even a foot. The entrance to Hawa Mahal is from the City Palace from where doors open into a commodious courtyard with double storeyed buildings covering three sides. Now a days the building, houses an Archaeological Museum. Only a single room is present in the upper two storeys. There are no any stairs to reach the upper floors. But instead there are ramps built for carrying the palanquin of the royal ladies.
As i told before Jaipur is pink city as well as the Hawa Mahal is made up of pink stone. Folowing one shows the closer view which shows pink color of Hawa Mahal……
Hawa Mahal has many screened balconies as well as tiny windows.
The Rajputs were strictly traditional. They did not wish their women folk to be seen in public. The Rajputs women were themselves immensely particular about their dignity and self respect so that they didn’t prefer to come out in open with the common public and strangers. For that reasonĀ the Hawa Mahal was built when women of the royal families had to observe strict purdah. The Hawa Mahal was builtonly for ladies, so that they could watch the processions and various activities taking place on the streets. This is the purpose for which Hawa Mahal has such tiny windows and many screened balconies. The royal ladies could look below, where the activities can be done by the people without showing themselves and thus enjoy a sense of freedom.
Hawa Mahal was strongly influenced by Mughal style of architecture.
The Hawa Mahal is standing on one of the main streets of Jaipur, still quietly monitors the affairs of the city dwellers and welcomes anyone who comes to inspect it.
The entire structure is having total 953 small casements each having small pink window & balconies. Cool breezes enter from the window and keep the inner atmosphere of Hawa Mahal extremely pleasant and airy.
