Katie Spotz creates history by rowing alone in Atlantic

After rowing on water for seventy days, five hours and twenty-two minutes, On Sunday Katie Spotz became the youngest person to row alone over the Atlantic. Katie Spotz is only 22 years old. Her accomplishment has made her a part of history as she is also the only American to have rowed over Atlantic alone.

However after reaching the shore Katie Spotz was overwhelmed with her achievement. She was received on the shore by a welcome party and treated with fresh watermelon. Her father had come to Georgetown to meet his daughter and has reportedly said that for all these seventy days he had been worrying about her who had been alone in the sea where there always lurks the danger of sharks and pirates.

Katie Spotz has covered a journey of 2,817 mile (4,500 kilometers) and reached Guyana on Sunday. She started her journey from west of Africa more than two months ago. During this period she had to face many hardships and on arriving on to the South America’s North Eastern fringe Katie Spotz said to the reporters that what effected her most was the lack of sleep that she suffered from for the whole period. Apart from the sleep deprivation Katie Spotz had to fight the sores and blisters and rashes which affected her due to the constant rowing every day. However the most dangerous thing happened when she was only around 50 nautical miles away from her destination. The tracking device caught fire which Katie Spotz has to extinguish using a fire extinguisher on board. For all these days her path was being tracked by a satellite.
