Voice over Internet Protocol, or what is commonly known as VoIP, is another product of Internet evolution. Instead of using your regular land line, or analog phone connection, you can make the phone call to another VoIP user, a landline number or a mobile number. VoIP is also sometimes referred to as Internet or broadband telephony, broadband phone, IP telephony or voice over broadband or VoBB, so don’t get confused with the terms because they mean the same.
1. VoIP, how does this service work:
When using VoIP, your voice is converted into digital signals or data packets when you make a PC to PC call. When you make a call to a landline it is converted to a regular landline signal before reaching the intended caller. Major resources you need are a fast, reliable Internet service and a software program that you have to download from VoIP providers. Once it is done, calls can be made by 1.) using your computer wherein you just need to get the proper headset and microphone, by 2.) using a special VoIP phone or by 3.) using your regular landline but you still need to have it connected to a special VoIP adapter.
2. VoIP Service Providers:
There are numerous Web sites that offer free VoIP access, such as Skype, Yahoo Voice and Google Talk, among others. PC to PC calls are usually free, but if you want to get a VoIP service similar to that of your landline with a hard phone, you can get a monthly subscription, say for example with VoIP providers such as Lucent or Cisco. They have packages that allow you to call even an international number at a fixed rate on a certain number of minutes per month. Try to check out their Web site to get extensive information on their rates.
3. Pros of VoIP:
You can get rid of one bill, which is your landline, and just pay for your Internet connection. Another thing is you can still continue using it even if you are not at home, as long as you are in a place with a high speed Internet connection, which comes in handy if you travel a lot and need to communicate back home or with the people at work.
4. Cons of VoIP:
Calling the Emergency Hotline 911 may not always work. Typical analog landline is usually associated with an address, so with the mobility that comes with VoIP restricts the possibility of being able to call 911 when you are on a different location. Also, during power interruptions, you won’t be able to use your VoIP service and there are no guarantees that your service provider can provide you with back up. You also might be unable to enjoy the privilege of getting white page listing or directory assistance.
