Before Gregor Mendel (1822-1844), nobody knew about Genetics.  Gregor Mendel was the founder of this new science which studied inheritance  of certain aspects of pea plants. He discovered that they followed a certain pattern of inheritance . After studying the patterns of inheritance in plants he turned to animals by trying to experiment with honeybees. However Gregor Mendel was unable to find a specific law or pattern in honeybees mainly because of varied mating behavior in bees. However, this research provided the much needed foundation for today’s study in genetics. Thus Gregor Mendel today is known as the father of modern genetics.
Google has also dedicated a doodle to Gregor Mendel on this birthday 20th July.
