Is pain felt in the back that usually originates from the muscles, nerves, bones, joints or other structures in the spine. Back painis among the most common medical conditions in the United States. Between 50 and 80 percent of all American adults suffer from back pain at some time, according to the Arthritis Foundation. It is the second most common neurological ailment in the United States, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Only headaches are more common. In some cases, back pain is acute, meaning it occurs suddenly and usually resolves within days or weeks. In other cases, back pain can be chronic, meaning that it is long-lasting.

Back pain can be divided anatomically: neck pain, upper back pain, lower back pain or tailbone pain.

  • Neck pain:Information About Back Pain

Neck pain, although felt in the neck, can be caused by numerous other spinal issues. Neck pain may arise due to muscular tightness in both the neck and upper back, or pinching of the nerves eminating from the cervical vertebrae. Joint disruption in the neck creates pain, as does joint disruption in the upper back. Treatment: Medication:Analgesics such as acetaminophen or NSAIDs are recommended for pain.Other medications like muscle relaxats such as orphenadrine or tizanidine are more of help. Topical creams and patches (such as salonpas or IcyHot) containing counterirritants are often used to great benefit as well. Physical therapies:Mobilisation and/or manipulation plus exercise has been found to be beneficial in both acute and chronic mechanical neck disorders.

    • Upper back pain:

    Upper back pain, also called middle back pain or thoracic pain, is pain that is felt between the bottom of the neck and top of the lumbar spine. The upper spine is very strong and stable to support the weight of the upper body, as well as to anchor the rib cage which provides a cavity to allow the heart and lungs to function and protect them. Treatment: Exercise/Active and passive physical therapy,  Joint manipulation, as commonly performed by chiropractors or osteopathi.hysicians Deep massage or massage therapy.      Acupuncture  Ice and/or heat therapy, Analgesics such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

    • Lower back pain:Information About Back Pain is a common symptom of musculoskeletal disorders or of disorders involving the lumbar vertebrae. It can be either acute, subacute or chronic in its clinical presentation. Typically, the symptoms of low back pain show significant improvement within two to three months from its onset. In a significant number of individuals, low back pain tends to be recurrent in nature with a waxing and waning quality to it.An acute lower back injury may be caused by a traumatic event, like a car accident or a fall.

    Treatment: Conservative treatment:For the vast majority of patients, low back pain can be treated conservatively. A systematic review of randomized controlled trials made a number of recommendations. Acute back pain:     Analgesics (pain medications), such as NSAIDs or acetaminophen.  Muscle relaxants for acute or chronic pain. There are, however, concerns with side effects, and their general use is discouraged.  Stay physically active. Exercise is no more effective than no treatment or other conservative treatments for acute low back pain.

    Among the many causes of back pain are:

    1. Strains or sprains
    2. Trauma
    3. Arthritis, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis
    4. Herniated discs and degenerative disc disease
    5. Pinched nerves and sciatica
    6. Compression fractures due to osteoporosis
    7. Structural abnormalities such as scoliosis
    8. Spinal stenosis
