This program is used to perform system repair and recovery when the machine would not start or files have been partially or completely corrupted for one reason or another.

1. Keep in mind these warnings to avoid totally ruining your computer. Using the Windows Recovery Console is only advised to users who are computer savvy and know a bundle about different commands or programs used to pinpoint the source of the problem. Furthermore, the Windows Recovery Console can only be accessed through an administrator’s account. Do not attempt to perform system repair and recovery procedures if you are not confident about your computer know-how.
2. Set up the Windows Recovery Console in your computer first and foremost. Have the original installation CD inserted into the optical drive of your computer. Now, direct your mouse pointer to the green Start button and click on it for a menu to appear. Select the command Run from among the choices presented by clicking on it once. Key in d:i386winnt32.exe /cmdcons into the empty text field of the Run window and press Enter on your keyboard. Hit the option Yes on the Setup Dialog Box that pops up on the screen. Lastly, restart your machine and notice that Windows Recovery Console is already included in the startup menu of your computer.
3. Perform system repair and recovery even when your computer won’t start. The Windows Recovery Console has to be accessed using the original Windows XP installation CD in computers that won’t boot. Do so by putting the CD in the respective drive and restarting the machine afterwards. Doing so will result in the Welcome to Setup window to pop up. Press the R key on your keyboard to commence the Windows Recovery Console program. Once done, key in the administrator password into the supplied text field and hit Enter on your keyboard.
4. Select the installed Windows XP programs that need system repair and recovery. Once the Windows Recovery Console menu window pops up you will see a list of programs that are currently installed on your Windows XP operating system. Now, identify which item from the list needs system repair and recovery. Once done, select the identified program by pressing its corresponding number on the keyboard for the Windows Recovery Console to start automatically
