Movie Review: Fashion; Movie star

Former beauty queen and Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra to whom all say “mujse Shadi Karogi” is one of the main attractions in Madhur Bhandarkar’s film but many will not know that she wore 137 outfits in the film and a tough compitition to SriDevi who had tried around 100 outfits in “Chandni“.
Priyanka said that she wore so much costumes because of the transition her character went through – from a small town girl to a model and gradually to a supermodel. She wore different dresses varying for her different character she went through. Fashion directed by Madhur Bhandarkar also features Kangana Ranaut, Mugdha Godse, Arbaaz Khan and Arjan Bajwa.
About the story we can tell is that,in these film priyanka plays a small-town girl, Meghna Mathur, who goes on to become a supermodel in Mumbai. The film is showing many international fashoin shows. Fashion begins in Chandigarh, where aspiring model Meghna Mathur (Priyanka) expresses her wish to go to Mumbai to her parents. While her dad (Raj Babbar) out rightly denies her permission, her mom (Kiran Juneja) is supportive.
Against her dad’s wishes, Meghna leaves her house with dreams in her eyes to strike it big in the modeling world. But it is not a path of roses for her as she experiences some major difficulties in her initial days in Mumbai. But she gets a good helping hand with an old acquaintance, Rohit (Ashwin Mushran) an aspiring designer who assists big shot designer Rahul Arora (Sameer Soni). She keeps bumping into another struggling model, Maanav (Arjan) while making the rounds of modeling agencies for auditions.
Meghna becomes good friends with Maanav and even starts sharing his apartment after she faces accommodation problems. Meghna gets noticed by India’s top modeling agency Panache’s top official, Anisha Roy (Kitu) who brings her to Panache boss, Abhijit Sareen’s (Arbaaz) notice. Abhijit gets impressed by her ambitious nature and go getter attitude. Panache’s face is Shonali (Kangana) but though very successful, her drug habit starts becoming a problem for her and subsequently for Panache.
Abhijit decides to terminate Shonali’s contract and ropes in Meghna in her place. Soon, Meghna is everywhere – right from being the showstopper at the biggest fashion shows in town to fashion magazine covers to print ads to TV commercials. The overnight success spoils Meghna and the budding love relationship between her and Maanav also comes to an abrupt end. What happens after Meghna reaches the pinnacle of success in the modeling world and how her journey also invariably leads to the downfall of Shonali and what shocking things further await Meghna forms the rest of the film.
Priyanka is seen flaunting a range of clothes from designer wear, while sashaying down the ramp, to t-shirts and jeans while portraying a model’s normal life. Throwing light on her different looks in the film, she said: “There are five changes that happen to my character in the film. When she comes from Chandigarh, she has a little bit of a small-town kind of styling, then she becomes a model… a little more polished. She then becomes very stylish and then a supermodel.
“When she loses her head, she becomes very arrogant and her make-up becomes darker and a lot more edgy. Then during her downfall, I am devoid of make- up. The resurrection portion is softer because she is scared and broken while trying to regain her self-confidence. We tried all those looks to keep different so that the character’s journey looks seamless through the film.”
“I added on six kilograms to look like a girl from Punjab before shedding it off as the film progresses. I went through a learning process to make my character look real. I had to study the character to live it and the film is looking good,” Priyanka said. I said yes to Fashion after six months. I wasn’t sure about many things when it came to me. Also, I wasn’t pretty sure about myself… whether I’d be able to do justice to the role or not. But Madhur showed immense confidence in me and I finally said yes,” she revealed.
The actress was thrilled when she started working as she got to catch up with her old friends from the ramp world during the shooting.
These year was not so successful for Priyanka as all four of her releases – Love Story 2050, God Tussi Great Ho, Chamku and Drona. So she is having lots of hopes from these film.
Priyanka will be next seen in Dharma Productions’ Dostana and is also shooting for films like Kaminay and What’s Your Raashee.
